Funded Research that Drives Value

Where Innovation Creates Value for Customers

At Halcor, innovation is not separate from production, it is built into it. Through our Funded Programmes Department, we turn European R&D collaborations into practical solutions that make our copper products smarter, cleaner, circular, human-centric and more resilient, creating better products for our customers and supporting Europe’s green and digital transition.

Innovation Areas & Projects

AI & Data Trust – PANDORA

Through the PANDORA project, we develop trustworthy AI frameworks using synthetic data and explainable AI. This strengthens the reliability of process data in copper extrusion, giving customers products manufactured under smarter planning, better traceability, and higher process stability.

Digital Twins & Predictive Systems – TRINEFLEX & R3GROUP

TRINEFLEX: Building process and product digital twins for copper tube drawing, enabling energy-optimised production and predictive maintenance that further enhance the performance of our production lines.

R3GROUP: Deploying AI-assisted defect detection and digital re-routing, delivering even higher product quality and zero-defect copper tubes for demanding applications.

Energy & Decarbonisation – StreamSTEP & TRINEFLEX

StreamSTEP: Introducing advanced heat exchangers and high-temperature heat pumps to recover waste heat in foundry operations, further reducing the energy intensity of our semi-finished copper products.

TRINEFLEX: Adding new capabilities in energy flexibility and load optimisation, so customers benefit from copper products with an even lower carbon footprint and enhanced sustainability profile.

Circular Economy & Symbiosis – THESEUS, CARDIMED, INWASTE

THESEUS: Creating the first Greek Hub for Circularity, promoting industrial symbiosis that increases the share of recycled resources in copper production.

CARDIMED: Piloting smart water management, advancing the way we use and reuse water in manufacturing.
INWASTE: Developing innovative methods for the valorisation of industrial waste streams, allowing copper products to be manufactured with higher recycling content and reduced environmental impact.

Human-Robot Collaboration – ROBO-COP

With ROBO-COP, we automate the loading and unloading of heavy copper coils on annealing furnaces using advanced human-robot collaboration, enabling higher productivity, improved quality through accuracy and repeatability, safer working conditions, and reduced environmental footprint.

AI-driven Remote Maintenance – ARMM

With ARMM, we combine predictive maintenance, IoT, and augmented reality to enable smart health assessment, anomaly detection, and Remaining Useful Life prediction of critical machinery, reducing downtime, extending asset lifetime, cutting maintenance costs, and improving workplace safety.

People & Skills – SkiComCu

SkiComCu develops XR-based training and lifelong learning tailored to copper industry operations. This strengthens Halcor’s workforce with advanced Industry 5.0 skills, so customers receive copper products made by teams that deliver precision, safety, and consistent quality.

Ontology-driven Data Documentation – OntoCommons (Kyritsis)

Developing ontologies for the Industry Commons use case at the Copper Tubes Plant to support raw material procurement decisions. The ontologies enable data integration across departments, covering energy monitoring, manufacturing, traceability, product specs, and waste management. Hands-on use of Protégé supports ontology development for the pilot between the two plants.
